Thai’m to reflect
Ko Tao, Thailand: This evening, like many evenings, we were sitting at a local bar enjoying a local beer (the beer of choice here in Thailand is called Chang - an impressive standard drink at 6.4% alcohol). We were sitting on a couple of bean bag chairs on the beach, watching the sun set, surrounded by other twenty-somethings from around the world who have come to Ko Tao for the incredible diving and to work off their week-long hangovers from the Full Moon Party. We ordered our usual dinner of Pad Thai and green curry ($3 per person - it would be $1.50 from a street vendor but we’re at a restaurant), which came in about 30 seconds, and was delicious. We were slathered in sunscreen and bug spray, sticky with sweat from a day in the sun, heat, and humidity. One of us mentioned to the other that we should take a picture - the beach was, after all, strikingly beautiful and the sunset only made it seem more so. But, we agreed we’ve already taken this picture. Or at least many pictures very similar to this one. Is it possible that after two weeks on the beaches of Thailand, we’ve become immune to its beauty - or perhaps we’ve started (dare we say it) taking it for granted?
Aside from being yet another island with breathtaking beaches, Ko Tao is also known for being one of the best places in the world for scuba diving. A combination of beautiful reefs, warm water, and extreme competition on the island means that it’s got some of the highest quality - and least expensive - diving instuction in the world. So, we’ve decided to spend the next few days in a classroom (sometimes a real classroom, sometimes an underwater classroom) learning the ropes. This may mean that we won’t have our usual set of pictures to share, but don’t fret - we will still be checking in occasionally and will hit our next destination soon! In a few days we will move on from Thailand and head east to Cambodia - where our travels will take us first to the famous temples of Angkor Wat.
In the meantime, a message to our friends and family, and anyone else who has stumbled upon our site: thank you for following along! It’s great to hear that people are enjoying our stories and pictures; please keep posting comments to remind us that you’re listening!
Much love,
Zach and Ashley
